Exotic/Wildlife Animal Rescue?
If I was to open an exotic animal rescue such as one for large cats,wildlife,parrots,raptors, reptiles etc. What kind of schooling would be required in order to do this? Im guessing degrees in zoology but this kind of idea has been bugging me for quite some time and im torn between this and aiming towards a career in veterinary medicine. I understand how hard it is to become a vet not to mention the school required but still, Can someone give me some info on this sort of thing. I really want to do something in one of these fields…
Well, opening up a rescue for big cats, wildlife, raptors… all needs to have proper enclosures which will be very expensive. The enclosures need to meet all the animals needs, otherwise you would be causing more harm then good. Not to mention appropriate food & vet care. So, in all cases it will be expensive. What to study, yes zoology/biology/ herpetology / ornithology. I have even taken Animal Handling classes (Hocking College) where I handled venomous rattlesnakes and a large variety of other reptiles and raptors.
I think most of the people who start these kinds of helping exotic animal organizations due it out of true compassion for the animals. Schooling costs a lot of money, but so does owning acres of property and all the main necessities each animal deserves/needs.
I think the most beneficial career for what you want to do, would be exotic/large cat veterinarian medicine only because you would be able to examine the rescued animals and cut costs on veterinarian bills. You wouldn’t need to hire an outside vet and you would always be on the property in case an emergency arises.
Also, the people who open these facilities do it for life, its their passion that excels and the need to help the animals. You may also consider studding non- profit orginizations so you can do everything possible to bring in money for the animals.
