Speed Reading Tips and Techniques
The majority of busy professionals spend 30 – 70% of their day reading reports, journals correspondence email etc. There are currently more than 9% of professionals studying part time which means even more books and articles. Imagine if you could increase your reading speed and simultaneously increase your comprehension levels!
Did you know the following facts?
- The average Australian reads at 200 words per minute
- John F Kennedy read at 1000 words per minute
- Deaf people read considerably faster as they do not translate words to sounds which dramatically influences reading speed
- Roosevelt read 2-3 books every day when he was President
- Your reading speed unnecessarily slows when reading from a computer
- The fastest speed reader in the world reads 25,000 words per minute
Many people are sceptical of ‘Speed Reading’. What is the point of reading faster if you cannot properly retain all the information? However reading slower does not ensure the information is retained either. We have all read information when our mind wandered off. Speed reading is all about reading at a higher speed when the mind is more engaged and the comprehension levels increase. Your brain can easily digest 1000 words per minute when someone speaks to you. The problem lies with the way we were taught to read at school. Sub vocalisation alone can reduce your speed by more then 18%.
Personally, I learnt to speed read in the first year of my Masters degree. I had 2 young children at home and any shortcuts were very welcome. I found speed reading a liberating experience as I flew through the required reading knowing I was reading faster and retaining more than my fellow students.
